Wiggle Blog 1. Alex Prince Osteopath:
January2008.
Having indulged myself in a extended recovery period following my Elbaman (Italy’s Ironman distance event), at the end of last season, and then over eaten and under exercised my way through the festive period, the new year now seems like another mountainous climb back to fitness.
No doubt once I m into it I will feel better.
My new years days plod was much the same as the boxing day one. Waddling along feeling rather flabby and just a tad hungover, hoping that the Garmin is fibbing about my pace and heart rate.
Actually, despite feeling ludicrously out of shape I have got that urge to get stuck into a new season, back to training and then into races.
I have been trying to work out a plan for the year and decided to target a few races but I think I will also leave some of the year open to add things in as I feel fit.
But first, I need to find my routine again:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Early morning club swim and cycle to and from work
Wednesday: Spin and/or run
Thursday: Cycle to and from work and club run
Friday: Early morning club swim
Saturday: Club ride
Sunday: Steady Run
Hopefully I will be able to manage most of this although it’s going to take some will power to get to the pool in the dark. I also need to timetable some flexibility and core stability work.
My initial targets are the coastal half marathons: Portland on 26th Jan and then Devon on 23rd Feb…and possibly the Cirencester off-road duathlon (early Feb). That should be a good, tough start.
I have a bit of a low back niggle which I am getting treated before it worsens (an asset of being an Osteopath with colleagues to put me back together!). I think this is probably a symptom of lack of exercise and loss of core stability.
Osteopath’s Tips for January:
Core Stability work should be an integral part of any training plan. It will not only help prevent injury but will also improve performance. January is a great time to start working on this. Also keep your muscles warm while training in the cold months and make sure you stretch when warm.
