Alex Prince: Velodromes, Yoga and Bling(ish) bikes.
Wiggle Blog 3: Alex Prince (Osteopath, and triathlete!)
Sun 3rd FebJanuary is over in a flash, and training is MOSTLY going to plan, although my plan is generally fairly relaxed.
A couple of unusual additions to my training week:1.Yoga- I did a dynamic yoga class, which really was DYNAMIC, I was breaking a sweat whilst contorting myself. I’m sure this will pay off with better flexibility. I have to say though; I was crap!
2. I went with a pal to the Newport Velodrome. Now this was the Business! I loved it and can’t wait to go again. We did a drills session followed by a 10 minute race at the end. It was manic but an awesome feeling. I think that it is probably very good for handling skills and definitely good speed training.
Running has been the main issue (still). I have been getting treatment for my calf problems and trying desperately not to aggravate the issue, so this has meant that I have not run at all until today. This is all very frustrating but I guess par for the course with sport, and I would rather get things sorted in January than having to address a chronic problem in the middle of the season. However, a gentle trot today for 15 minutes has been promising, so I’m hoping all will be well.I have been blessed with dry weather for my cycle rides (I don’t know how, certainly more luck than judgement), although it has been cold and windy. The dhb gear I have been wearing I must say has done a great job in terms of warmth and comfort.
Last weekends weather was so good, I treated my bling new(ish) bike to an outing. It gleamed in the sunshine and was admired! I was reminded of how nice it is to ride, smooth and comfy and most definitely quicker! Despite this, the 42 miler was fast, furious and although I kept up with the “racing snakes”(if I can use that term for cyclists??) for the first part of the ride, I was dropped like a stone at the first major hill (and with me, several other mere mortals who had slowed to cruiser speed)… highlighting my major cycling weakness-The HILL!
This weekend was a fresh 65mile ride which was great, and I felt great, so hopefully I’m getting there.
Swimming has been a touch sporadic, but still getting to the pool for most of the morning sessions, I just find it hard!
I’m hopeful that my calves be ok and then the running can start properly again. Coastal half marathon looming!Osteopaths tips for February:
Try Yoga/ Pilates for a regular form of flexibility work. This will help improve performance and aid injury prevention.
Try the Velodrome- It rocks!!!
