Coast to Coast USA Ride - Part 1
Wiggle are delighted to be supporting Matthew Dowse and Andrew Wyeth as they cycle across the USA from Coast to Coast.
Matthew and Andrew’s quest is to complete the USA coast to coast ride in 12-15 days which amounts to 200-250 miles a day, riding at an average speed of 20+ mph whilst raising as much money as possible for Leukaemia Research, The Royal Marsden Hospital and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. They would love to top as much as £100k, but clearly this is down to the generosity of individuals, organisations and companies alike, along with lots of publicity!
Wiggle are providing most of their kit for the incredible journey including 2 Focus Cayo Experts.
They will be writing daily updates while on their ride and they will also be keeping us up to date with their training.

Fundraiser for USA C2C 2008
As a part-time athlete I always face a dilemma of that perennial question: whether to do what I am supposed to be doing or to train. Chuck in the added dimension of England playing the All Blacks last weekend and that is a pretty good summary of my life in general and last Saturday morning. Work, train, rugby are the consistencies of what I do. Last weekend Matt and I hosted a fundraising launch for our ride at our rugby club Rosslyn Park FC, in SW London. This added stress was a necessary one as we needed to get the ball rolling for the fundraising bank, after all that’s what this is all about!
Pippa, Matt’s long term Partner, had been working long and hard behind the scenes getting things organised and did a fantastic job. I had a few things to do and had to cram in on the Friday evening and Saturday morning to finish my job off! This meant that I was reduced to an indoor spin session both on the Friday evening and Saturday lunchtime – not good training for 200 miles a day!
Anyway, it’s inevitability, and it is what it is (my favourite saying at the moment!). We will have to ride ourselves into this challenge; it’s as simple as that.
The fundraising do went really well and we raised over 8K on the evening. The resultant hangover (drinking Whisky with my farmer-boy cousin as we watched the day begin definitely didn’t help), meant that I was reduced to an evening spin on the Sunday which barely registered on the Richter scale. The hope of reaching Monday and bigger and better things, and the fact that now at 40 I have such a massive fitness base, so it will all be fine, (my second fave saying at the moment), eased the conscience somewhat and enabled me to eventually drop off to a non-alcohol induced sleep.
Thank you to all that donated at the do and the help on the evening – and of course Pippa. Ill be back.
