(We have a cycling club turbo night, and a ’stretch’ session with our Physio – usually the most painful part of the week – on a thursday night)

So I’ve gone from a feeling of stunned elation to being completey intimidated and wondering if we can keep up with possibly one of the all round fastest people on the planet, even for a training session!

The Paris–Roubaix is a one-day professional bicycle road race in northern France near the Belgian frontier. Since its beginning in 1896 until 1967 it started in Paris and ended in Roubaix (hence the name); since 1968 the start city is Compiègne (about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north-east from Paris center), whilst the finish is still in Roubaix.

Famous for rough terrain and cobblestones, first run in 1896, Paris–Roubaix is one of cycling’s oldest races. It is well known for the many ‘cobbled sectors’ over which it runs, being considered, along with the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Gent-Wevelgem to be one of the cobbled classics. The race has also seen several controversies over the years, with many seeming winners of the race disqualified for various reasons.

We have now picked the winner for the adidas Virgin London Marathon competition which ended in December 2009. I got the mail-shot from Wiggle about applying to enter the draw for the Adidas sponsored London Marathon places, and to be honest I usually ignore that kind of thing,… I had a spare 5 minutes so replied as in the ad, and was really chuffed to get a place!! I NEVER win stuff like that!! As soon as I found out I went and bought a couple of Lucky Dips in the Lottery, just in case!!

Anyway, rewind three years, and I was a lazy fat git, I weighed about 17stone, smoked 40 fags a day, drank lots and ate junk. I had a fast-track pass to a heart-attack. Myself and my mate Mike kept doing daft things, playing tricks on each other and generally seeing who could think of the best prank; for example, after a long hard hike in the Peak District he said to me “Can I have my brick back now, please”… He’d slipped a house brick in my rucksack back at the car!! Git!! I repaid him by buying his kids the noisiest and most annoying Xmas presents I could find… itching powder, whoopee cushions etc. Anyway, I’m waffling, Mike, who is a good distance runner, entered me into the Wilmslow Half Marathon in Jan 07, bearing in mind I was unable to run a kilometre. I joined a running club and trained three or four times a week, and hit my target time of 2 hours, still smoking and drinking.

I then got a bit ambitious, and entered a full marathon without realising quite what I was taking on. I still smoked 40 a day and drank too much, and actually took a couple of cigarettes and a lighter in the race with me as I couldn’t go five hours without a smoke!! It was a suffer fest, I was completely under-prepared, walked most of it past mile 16, and took over 5 and a half hours.

I then decided another marathon was WAYYYY too far, so had a go at a couple of sprint triathlons… My god triathlon is addictive, almost as addictive as Wiggling and waiting for that little cardboard box of presents to arrive every week! (Is it just me or is Wiggle a really good way of getting free deliveries of Haribos to your door???) Anyway, from sprint tris to training camps, to half ironmans and then the full ironman distance last October (with a slipped disc!!), stopping smoking, losing weight and getting a whole lot fitter, healthier and happier along the way, as well as making some of my best friends through the sport. I’ve got anther couple of Ironman races planned this year, in some really cool parts of the world.

I’ve never got into the London Marathon, so this will be really special, and excellent training for my races later in the year (though don’t expect an impressive time!!)… My life has completely changed from three years ago, and none of what I’ve achieved and experienced in that time would have been possible if Mike hadn’t got me to do that half marathon, which is why I’m particularly pleased to be able to take him along with me, just to say thanks in a small way, with the amount of kit I’ve bought, Wiggle should thank him too!!! :o)

I never win anything, well at least not competitions to win useful things, (I even struggle to win a goldfish at the fair – not technically useful for me, but keeps the children happy!)….. so what a great surprise to get the email from Jason at Wiggle saying I’d won a prize for a review.

Dead chuffed. To be honest, I saw the prizes, and have used garmin kit before – and liked it, and thought it would be great to have a go, so pulled up my recent orders and did a few reviews – then thought a video review would be the best way of getting noticed……so I’ve got these new 2XU tights which are pretty good, and I ask the children if they think they’re any good, and to encourage them video me dancing like a loony and getting their comments…… and thus the video. Making the video with the children was great fun, and I didn’t really consider winning anything after that, but its a fantastic surprise.

Well, a fancy GPS watch will keep me on the straight and narrow – I’m sure we all like to think we’ve run/cycled further than we might actually have managed, and this gadget will bring the harsh reality of winter training speeds to life. Cant wait to use it and get fitter and faster for next years season….. (Hey I can even be one of those chaps who runs a 10k race and then tells the organiser the actual course measurement ….. how popular can a guy get???) Thanks to Jason and all at Wiggle!!

Wow – I’d won a prize in the review competition but I didn’t know because my spam box ate the email! Fortunately, Wiggle didn’t give up on me and left a message on the answer phone. However, having just staggered out of a hard gym session I had to listen to it twice, to be sure it wasn’t the figment of an exhausted imagination!

As a ‘Garmin junkie’ I was ecstatic to win the FR60 and avidly set about reading the Wiggle reviews, which only confirmed what a great prize it was (thanks folks!). And to put ‘icing on the Christmas cake’ it arrived the very next day, on Christmas Eve.

First impressions suggest very high quality, great looks and a really comfortable fit, but I’ll write a review of course when I’ve put it through its paces.

I’m incredibly impressed at the quality and quantity of Wiggle customer reviews and find them an indispensable aid to making buying decisions. I’m really pleased to do my bit to contribute to such a great site, with a superb user community.

I used my Garmin 310XT for the first time this morning and it was excellent!

I ran one of my usual training routes through the woods and I was pleased to learn that my route was bang on what I thought it was!

There is so much more on the Garmin 310XT that I need to learn how to use but I think it will be a superb training tool to assist me in the build up to London in April.

I was surprised to hear that I had won a competition; it’s not something I’m used to. The guys at Wiggle are as efficient at giving prizes away as they are with customer service! On 21st December I received an email explaining that my review had been selected and asking me to reply. Then before I knew it, the Garmin Nuvi 1690 computer arrived in time for Christmas.

I had spent six months deciding on a new bike and finally settled on the Focus Cayo with the help of the reviews and answers to customer questions posted on the Wiggle website. I felt it was only fair to pass on my experiences with the new bike. The prospect of winning a Garmin computer for Christmas, trying my hand at writing a review in the style of bike magazines and shoot a video encouraged me to get out on the new bike (even if I had planned to keep it stored away until better weather). After a couple of cold winter cake-runs on the Fens and several ‘takes’ from my cameraman I felt ready to take on the challenge. I am overjoyed with the new bike and can’t wait for the better weather to switch over to it on a more permanent basis.

Hopefully, the new Garmin computer will encourage me to learn to drive! As supportive as my family and friends are regarding my cycling, I am getting to the point where the nudges in the direction of driving schools are becoming increasingly forceful… Don’t worry, I’ll still be a cyclist inside.

A couple of days ago i got an email from Jason at Wiggle – not the normal ads that tell me whats on offer this month but a BIG surprise to find I’d been selected as one of the 5 winners of a Suunto T3C as a result of my review on my Elite Chrono Fluid turbo trainer !

Its a surprise as I’m not the sort of bloke that wins anything – not even a tenner on the lottery. In fact, i think the last time i won anything i was about 8 years old at the school tombola and even then it was probably a small bag of sweets or a jar of jam…

Today it arrived and to say I’m chuffed to bits is an understatement – i haven’t had one of these before and having tried it out on the bike and trainer its a great aid to my training . Now all i need is the speed pod and maybe a cadence one…

So I was eating my Hummus and various Greek ruffage I had decided to make that evening after my run. I consider myself an aggressive amateur with a height handicap of 6 foot 3 (190cm for everyone not in the US) and it tears up my knees (cycling is my forte). Having the good fortune of a very cute (and very quick, though I’m sure the pace wasn’t even breaking a sweat for them) pacer to try and keep up with for the duration of my workout, led to my best pace yet achieved of 7:54 minute mile. I had gone sub 8 minute mile, this was big for me, big in the same way I am big- height I mean… not fat (much), just tall.

So a good recover shake was in order, a good meal, and several acceptable beers that are available in my small town (not Busch-Miller-Coors garbage, yuck). So over the course of the next hour I was preparing and enjoying my delicious dinner, and two beers (most likely demolishing my progress….) going through my bookmarks. Checking the weather, the blogs, the webcomics, and the email: spam, spam, spam, get a bigger pen15… spam, something from Wiggle. Whats this? I won free stuff? Are you sure this isn’t spam… surely you jest… What follows the discovery of winning a fairly nice HRM is me giggling like a fairy at my good fortune. Fortunately no one was around to witness my moment of weakness.

I was not only ecstatic about winning a nice piece of training equipment, I was relieved. Allow me to elaborate: Recently my crew has been committing mutiny against their captain. My very nice headlamp of three years decided to stop working in such a way that it would not stop working. I had to disconnect the battery pack from the light to turn it off, not an easy task considering the robustness of the connection. I sent it in for repairs, no more early morning workouts before the sun rises. My cassette on my road bike has become so worn that it has begun jumping and skipping hard when I am mashing up hills, robbing my momentum and taking the fun out of the masochism that is road biking. The pads and fitting mechanism on my helmet has become separated from the helmet creating a very dangerous helmet that could fly off my head while the cinch straps stay firmly in place, so it will effectively become one of those silly leather helmets of the days of old.

My relief originated because I knew I would soon have a new gizmo to play with, that would most assuredly function properly, till I abuse it into submission. Which is something I can guarantee will happen eventually. Nothing stands between me and the frustration of dealing with home brew repairs or giving the warranty department a headache.

I’d like to thank my family and friends, my English teacher, Internet provider and the teams at Wiggle and Suunto, without whom I wouldn’t be receiving this great prize….

Go back five days before this award winning acceptance speech and there I was, with aching limbs, a temperature of 39, a resting heart rate of 118bpm and flashing lights when I closed my eyes. Competition fever had been running high. It actually turns out that I had swine flu, which would better explain some of the symptoms, however this is not to say that entering the Wiggle competition and waiting for the outcome wasn’t exciting. What I can say is that winning one of the Suunto watches has given me a much needed boost in my recovery from the dreaded “S” word and as I don’t yet have a watch to help me in my training then this is a double whammy of a prize. Furthermore, I am supposed to be running the Abbey Dash 10k on the 22nd November and the Suunto heart-rate monitor will give me peace of mind to give it a go and be confident that I can keep an eye on my condition! In all seriousness, thank you Wiggle and thank you Suunto.

When I seen the competition was running I thought “yeah as if I have a chance of winning that”. But I stepped up my reviewing a bit and even entered the top ten reviewers for a while. But the main reason for doing the reviews was not to win the competition, that was soon forgotten. I quite often find myself relying on reviews by others when parting with my cash and thought it is only right to leave my own reviews to help others out.

Having looked at the reviews for the t3c it looks like I’ve won a good product and with intentions of picking up some running over the winter when I’m on the bike less this will spur me on that bit more and be a bit more focused in my effort. I’m really looking forward to getting my mits on it and giving it a try out.
