Carolyn Hewett Profile
Age:
31
Location:
Hammersmith, London
About me:
I think I can bring a different element than what already exists. I’m not a professional athlete; I have a full time job and I do triathlon for fun. I also don’t fit the stereotypical triathlete; I’m very interested in fashion and like wearing high heels rather than living in tracksuits and runners. I must be one of the few people who has a subscription to Triathlon 220 and Vogue. I’d like to think I can contribute to Team Wiggle by sharing my experiences and giving a different spin on racing and training.
I think that I could be a great representative for not only Wiggle, but for Triathlon as a sport. I have a passion for the sport and my experience after contracting viral meningitis has made me appreciate what a difference triathlon can make to people’s lives. It has helped me manage my illness, give me a different perspective on life and improve my health beyond all expectations. I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs or walk more than 100 metres 3 years ago and I have now done 4 ironmans in 15 months.
By sharing what I have been through and have managed to achieve in a short time, I believe I could encourage others to take that next step, be that a sprint distance race or going all out and doing Decaman! Team Wiggle to me is about helping people realise their potential and by being on the team I can help do that too.

2007 Results
June – The Dragon Ride set in the amazing Brecon Beacons. I did the shorter 135km route and was the 5th fastest female rider.
July – Eastnor Castle Classic – 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run set around the beautiful town of Ledbury. I was 5th woman and achieved the fastest run time for the women.
July – The Beaver Fest 1/2 Ironman in Leicestershire. 2km swim, 80km bike, 21km run set in the picturesque grounds of Belvoir Castle. I placed 2nd in my age group and 4th overall in the women.
August – Michelob London Triathlon. Set in London’s docklands it is a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run. I was 4th in my age group and 12th overall in the women.
August – Ironman UK – Set in Sherborne, Dorset on the grounds of the castle. A 3.8km swim in the castle lake, 180km ride on the Dorset hills and a 42.2km run around the castle grounds and local town. My first Ironman and I completed the race in 11:04:57. I won my age group and was the 12th woman across the line.
October – Ironman World Championship – Kona, Hawaii. An iconic race I qualified for at Ironman UK. It’s a 3.8km ocean swim, a windy 180km ride across the lava fields and a marathon through the heat of the day. After a very tough race carrying a knee injury I finished in 12:56:07 and placed 43rd in my age group.
Goals for 2009:
I have only ever focused on Ironman racing so this year I am dropping back to doing some shorter distance races in order to bring my speed up across all disciplines. I am also going to be spending quite a bit of time working on my cycling speed and strength by training in the Alps. I’m very lucky in that I have access to an apartment in Nice to base myself.
Ultimate sporting ambition:
To keep enjoying triathlon as much as I do today.
Favourite race:
Ironman Austria for the beauty and hospitality extended to competitors and their supporters. Also the Ford Ironman World Championship for the hype and excitement of being where triathlon all began and racing alongside the best in the world.
Favourite training session:
My long bike ride, especially when I am in the Alps. One of my favourite climbs is Col de la Madone where Lance Armstrong used to do his testing. I am close to his time…if he does it twice! My other favourite is Col de Braus which is very cool to look back on with all it’s switchbacks.
Sporting hero:
Lance Armstrong for fighting and coming back even better after having cancer. Truly inspiring.
