About Lee:
Lee is an up and coming rider whose focus for the season ahead will be MTB cross country. With some promising results already to his name – he has ridden in a number of senior World Cup races and is Welsh champion – his future looks bright and we’re excited to have him on board. He’s not afraid to mix it up and when he’s not concentrating on XC, he’s also into cyclocross, road riding and MTB marathons. In fact, he’s a former Brecon Beast champion and U23 national marathon champion. He’s looking forward to racing as often as possible this season on his Focus Raven Pro and hopes to be in action in Welsh regional races, the Gorrick Series, the Irish National Series, British NPS and selected World Cup races.
Sport:
Cycling
Years in sport:
10 Years
Preferred distance:
Olympic cross country. MTB
Major achievements:
I hope that these are all ahead of me. Racing against the best always gives me a buzz but any win I’ve had makes the day worthwhile.
Goals for 2009:
Getting in the top 50 at a world cup. Podiums at the British national events and enjoy the competition.
Ultimate sporting ambition:
To represent my country at the major competitions. Win as many medals as possible.
Favourite race:
Has to be my first world cup experience as a junior. Racing at Houffalaize, Belgium. I was lined up at the start and gridded 4th(I was the only Brit there and nobody knew me) with a field of nearly 200 behind me. The crowds lined the barriers and the anticipation and excitement was at full volume. Off went the gun and we charged into the first corner. The race was such a full on experience being a battle all the way through. By the end my lack of condition and over enthusiastic start was starting to tell but the whole thing left me wanting more of the same. The race just confirmed what I already knew about my sporting ambitions and it still gives me focus now
Favourite training session:
I’ve got a few but one I enjoy is on recovery days after a hard race. I go to the sauna at the local sports centre. Then it’s gas mark 4 for 15mins followed by 10 lengths of the pool. I then repeat this up to five times. I come out feeling that I’ve done some good work, rested my legs and had a good natter about the day before.
Sporting hero:
Paula Radcliffe springs to mind. Her dedication to succeed as well as her conduct in and out of sport is exemplary. In my sport I always feel privileged to line up with Nick Craig or Barry Clark. They have both got the T-shirt but are in no way aloof or anything. A real couple of gents, nice guy’s.
2009 Race Results:
1st – BUSC XC Champs
1st – Dragon XC Series
14th – NPS RD1, Sherwood Pines
1st – Midlands XC Event
1st – Elite Mens Wiggle Enduro 6
