About me:
I have been involved in the sport of cycling since my early school days when I initially joined a local cycling club. I used to join the other members on their Sunday club runs and I competed in their time trials. Two years later I moved on to road racing – absolutely loved it and I have been hooked ever since. After 25 years in this great sport, I have learnt a tremendous amount and always try to share my knowledge with new riders who are just starting out. As well as training, racing, and holding down full time employment, I also take teams representing Surrey Cycle Racing League over to race in Ireland. My last trip to Ireland was in May of last year when the Surrey League had a team in the 2008 UCI 2.2 International FBD Insurance RaS 9 Day Stage Race. What I most enjoy now is racing/riding with other riders, and friends, who have been cycling for as long as I have.
Sport:
Road Racing, Sportives, and the occasional Time Trial.
Years in sport:
25 years
Preferred distance:
Various
Goals for 2009:
Mostly local road races in Hampshire and races based in Surrey namely the Easter 3 Day and the Jaunts 5 Day.
Ultimate sporting ambition:
It had been to ride the Havant Grand Prix and ride as hard as I could before blowing big time and ending my race at the Bat & Ball Public House, which was a great vantage point for watching the last laps before the race finished back in Havant. Now it’s to finish the Revolutions 5 day.
Favourite race:
Army CU 3 Day Stage Race (alas no more) and being part of the FBD Insurance RaS Surrey Team.
Favourite training session:
Abroad – Mallorca. The ride starts in Puerto Pollenca and climbs to Lluc. From here you carry on until the viaduct, where there is a café, you then take the right fork to a fishing village called Sa Calobra – the descent is something else. If you have been there before you will understand what I mean. The climb back up is just as breath-taking, but very hard. Once you retrace back to the viaduct you then retrace back to Lluc and descend into two villages called Caimari and Selva. From here you take the quiet back roads to Lloseta and finally into Binissalem visiting the famous bike shop.
The return leg takes you through Biniagual, Sencelles and Sineu. Then onto Llubi, Muro and into Sa Pobla. From here it’s through the “marshes” into Alcudia, then via the back roads to Pollenca, finishing with a sprint for the sign at Gotmar just outside Pueto Pollenca.
Home – 3 to 5 hour rides in the numerous lanes around Hampshire and Surrey taking in many of the steep short climbs along the way.
Sporting hero:
When I was younger I admired Bernard Hinault and the likes of Phil Anderson, Luis Herrera and Laurent Fignon
